Apple hat gerade eine neue App in den Mac App Store gebracht: iBooks Author. Hinter der neuen App steckt das neue Konzept Apples: Schulbücher für iPads, und jeder sollte einfach und schnell eigenen eBooks für den iBook Store veröffentlichen können. Diese Richtung geht ganz klar gegen Amazon, und deren (noch) größeren Shop mit eBooks.
Mit dem iBooks Author ist es jetzt möglich, ganz einfach selbst eBooks zu kreieren und zu erstellen, und diese dann mit wenigen Klicks im iBook Store oder in iTunes U zu veröffentlichen.
Der iBooks Author bringt viele Features: Multitouch-Widgets, vorgefertigte Templates, 3D Objekte, einfaches veröffentlichen in iTunes U oder für den iBook Store.
Neben dem iBooks Author hat Apple auch die App iBooks auf einen neuen Stand gebracht. Version 2.0 unterstützt nun eine Vielzahl neuer Funktionen, die wohl erst mit den neu veröffentlichten Büchern zum Tragen kommen werden.

Den iBooks Author gibt es kostenlos im Mac App Store. Die App ist 136 MB groß, und setzt OS X Lion 10.7.2 voraus.
Grafisch passt sie sich dem iWork – Layout an. Dies dürfte für viele den Einstieg in die App erleichtern. Zum Veröffentlichen benötigt man den iTunes Producer. Ein einfacher Button ermöglicht die Vorschau des Buches auf dem iPad:
Die Frage ist noch, wie Apple die eingereichten Bücher prüft, und ob wirklich alle erstellten eBooks einfach so in den iBook Store gelassen werden.
